Explore the eclectic streets between the harbour and the sea, find street art, amazing new architecture, and check out some of Newcastle's most beautiful hidden houses. We'll show you some of Newcastle's most interesting historic sites and architecture, and new creative hubs.

This tour is the perfect way for locals from the region to gain a better understanding of Newcastle. This tour will cover 3km at a leisurely pace finishing in in Cooks Hill where you can order lunch or stroll through the shops of Darby Street. The tour is wheelchair and pram accessible and suitable to all ages.


What you'll learn

Your friendly local guide will provide amazing insights into Newcastle and Cooks Hill showcasing things you would never discover on your own, sharing interesting local stories and fun facts along the way. 

Your local guide Becky is the Festival Director of The Big Picture Fest Newcastle, Australia's newest large-scale street art festival. Through the behind-the-scenes tour you will learn how mural creation has moved illegal to coveted, and discover how some of Newcastle's most unique public art was created.

The tour is full of fascinating stories from Aboriginal culture and the city's early colonial days, right through to Newcastle's exciting modern developments and public art. 


Meeting Point

Your tour starts at The Signal Box, 155 Wharf Road.

We will meet near the water fountain next to The Signal Box next to Queens Wharf Light Rail Stop. Look for your guide in a Newcastle Afoot t-shirt - don't worry, we will be easy to find! There is seating available in the area.

The tour may not go ahead if the minimum number of guests (2) is not met. There is a minimum of 4 guests required for this tour to go ahead on public holidays. 

Children

Children are welcome on our walking tours, we love sharing our excitement about the city with people of all ages! Please note that this tour may have people from a variety of ages and we will endeavour to make it interesting for everyone. 

Dress Code

Wear comfortable shoes, preferably closed toed. Bring sun and/or rain protection and a bottle of water.

Weather Information

Newcastle Afoot walking tours operate in nearly all weather conditions, so we will go ahead even if it is raining!

Please check the weather on the morning of your tour and prepare appropriately - bring an umbrella and rain jacket as needed. Sunscreen is a must - we will be outside most of the tour. On very hot days the tour will be adapted to reduce our time in the sun.
